Frequently Asked Questions

Blue Light and your Eyes
What is harmful blue light?

Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. Sunlight is the primary source of natural blue light, which helps to keep us awake and regulate our sleep cycle. General lighting, desktop computers, laptops, tablets, electronic reading devices and smartphones also emit artificial blue light, which gets absorbed deep in the eye, making it potentially detrimental to long-term vision. Unfortunately, due to the amount of time we spend using digital devices and how close we view them, the risk of blue light overexposure from screen time can be much more harmful than we realize, hence protecting our vision has never been more important.

Do your eyes need protection from blue light?
  • I regularly use a computer or tablet
  • I typically watch a wide-screen TV
  • I use my cell phone frequently
  • I work and live around LED and CFL lighting

If you have checked any of these, you may be at risk for damaging exposure to blue light.

How to measure your pupillary distance?

Pupillary distance (PD), refers to the distance in millimeters between the pupils of your eyes. It is an essential measurement to ensure optimal comfort and clarity in which the optical center of your glasses should be directly aligned in front of the center of your pupils. Your prescription along with the PD measurement can be provided by your eye doctor. Pupillary distance can vary widely, the average distance for an adult is 63mm. If PD measurement is not available, measuring it yourself is easy, just follow the steps below:

  • Stand about 10 inches in front of a mirror and hold a millimeter ruler horizontally over the bridge of your nose
  • Close your right eye, align the ruler’s zero mark to the center of your pupil of the left eye.
  • While holding the ruler still, close your left eye and open your eye right to find the millimeter mark on the ruler that aligns with the center of the pupil.
  • Record this measurement as your pupillary distance. Repeat the above steps to ensure an accurate measurement.

The pupillary distance is 64mm
